Italy: Open PhD positions in Various Fields, University of Macerata

Admission requirements and applications

1. Applications for the PhD positions are invited from candidates, regardless of age, who have an Italian “laurea quadriennale” or “specialistica” or “magistrale” or equivalent degree qualification obtained abroad.

2. Candidates holding a foreign qualification, with the application form, must require the recognition of the equivalence of his/her own qualification certified by the University of Macerata, attaching to the application form the following documentation:
a) a copy of the degree certificate and its translation into Italian, authenticated by an Italian Consulate or Embassy in the country where the degree was issued
b) a transcript of all the examinations required by the degree programme, including the final marks obtained in each examination, along with its translation into Italian authenticated by an Italian Consulate or Embassy in the country where the degree was issued
c) declaration of equivalent value (Dichiarazione di valore)

3. The call for admission is reserved to students who are non-EU citizen.

4. Applications for admission to the selection process should be made using the application form attached at the end of this document. The application must be sent to the following address:

Università degli Studi di Macerata – Area Ricerca Scientifica e Alta Formazione - Ufficio Scuola di Dottorato, Piaggia della Torre, 8 - 62100 Macerata - Italy by 2 p.m. September 4th, 2009 (applications arriving after the deadline will be disregarded, even if sent before the deadline).

5. Candidates must also attach the receipt of payment of € 15 for expenses. Payment must be done in the following way: bank account no. 10250, payment to Università degli Studi di Macerata, at any branch of Banca delle Marche S.p.A. or money transfer, bank account no. 18057 at any Bank (IBAN G 06055 13401 000000018057 – SWIFT code BAMAIT 3AXXX), specifying “Contributo spese concorsuali dottorato”.

6. Each application for admission can refer only to one PhD course.

7. Applications that are not sign by the applicant, or not including personal data, or the required declarations, or the option of the PhD course to which the candidate seeks admission, or those received after the deadline will not be consider.

8. The University Administration is not responsible for the loss of communication due to inaccurate address or candidate’s change of address or for communication delay due to the post office.

Admissions Commission
1. The Admissions Commission is appointed by the Rector with a decree. The Admissions Commission will consist of three Macerata University teaching staff plus a substitute.

2. At the end of the comparative evaluation the Commission compiles one final overall classification, on the basis of the score obtained by the candidates. The candidates will be informed of the results by registered mail. The final classification will be published on the web site of the School at the address http://www.unimc.it/sda > “Bandi di concorso e graduatorie” section.

Comparative evaluation
1. The admission procedure consists of the comparative evaluation of the educational qualifications submitted by the candidates in order to assess the candidate’s research skills. For this reason the candidates must submit:
• a research project
• curriculum vitae and list of publications (if any);
• a statement of knowledge of the Italian language;
• 2 letters of introduction from teaching staff of the student’s home University;
• copy of ID card or passport.

2. The Admission Committee can assign up to a maximum of 60 points to each candidate, divided as follows: 30 for the research project, 20 for the curriculum vitae, publications and letters of introduction and 10 for the Italian language skills. Only candidates with a minimum score of 40/60 are eligible to be included in the overall final list of recipients of the scholarships.

3. At the end of the comparative evaluation, the Admission Commission draws up an official report which includes the final overall list of the applicants.

4. The available scholarships will be awarded to the 5 top candidates in the list, having the qualification required.

5. This official report will be forwarded to the Rector by the President of the Commission.

Admission and registration for the PhD courses
1. Successful candidates must submit the following documentation, before the communicated deadline, to Area Ricerca Scientifica e Alta Formazione – Scuola di Dottorato, Piaggia della Torre, 8 - 62100 Macerata – ITALY:
a) enrolment form which can be download from the web site
http://www.unimc.it/sda >
“Modulistica” section > “Area dottorandi” section > Domanda di immatricolazione, with
revenue stamp (for the value of € 14.62);
b) the receipt of payment of €100.00 which covers the regional tax for the study right and of the obligatory civil insurance;
c) a passport –size photo;
d) a copy of the identity document signed by the owner.

2. Candidate who is offered a scholarship must declare, in the enrolment form, the following:
a) not to be already registered on other study courses and not to register on other one during the PhD programme;
b) that he/she is not permanently employed and he/she will seek authorization from the Teacher Committee before starting any occasional or short-term employment;
c) that he/she has never been awarded another PhD scholarship before, not even for a single year;
d) that they don’t have other scholarship except for those granted by national or foreign institutions to integrate learning and research activities during a visit abroad;
e) that he/she will not have a gross personal year income above € 15,000 in the calendar year in which he/she benefits from the scholarship.

Scholarship
1. The five top successful candidates will be awarded one annual scholarship of the amount of € 13,638.47 subject to tax deduction, according to the Italian Law.

2. Candidates who already obtained a scholarship for the PhD course, not even for a single year, cannot receive another one.

3. The winner of the scholarship loses the right if he/she does not express the acceptance within the term communicated from the Administration, in which case the scholarship will be offered to the next eligible candidate.

4.The annual scholarship can be confirmed only after passing first year evaluation exams organised by the Teachers Committee.

5. The differed payment of the scholarship will be made in bimonthlyinstalments starting from the beginning of the course activity, subject to a statement of regular attendance issued by Course Coordinator.

6. The amount of the scholarship can be increased if candidates choose to spend some time studying in a foreign country.

7. Candidates cannot receive other scholarships except for those granted by national or foreign institutions to integrate learning and research activities abroad.The scholarship is also incompatible with a gross personal income exceeding the amount of €15,000 a year.

8. Scholarship holders are exempted from paying the standard university tuition fees. They must, however, pay the contribution which covers the regional tax for the study right (€ 90)
and of the obligatory civil insurance (€ 10), which amounts of € 100 for each year of thecourse, to be paid on enrolment.

9. Benefitting from the scholarship there’s not represent a form of employment with University of Macerata.
