A. Background The 2009 Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship is the seventh year of the Program that was initially offered and awarded to member countries of the South West Pacific Dialogue (SwPD); Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the host Indonesia. Bearing in mind the success of the program, the offer was expanded over the years to include member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea), and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), as well as India and South Africa. Last year, Indonesia welcomed new awardees from Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. This year will see new awardees from Austria. B. Objective The program aims at demonstrating Indonesia's commitment as an initiator of the establishment of Southwest Pacific Dialogue (SwPD) and as the originator member of ASEAN in advancing the social culture cooperation in the region. The program also has as objective to encourage better understanding amongst awardees of participating countries through Indonesia's immensely diverse art and cultural heritage. Finally, to cultivate a cultural of cooperation, emerging from direct contact and sharing of cultures amongst people involved in the program, leading to thriving diplomatic relations in the region and worldwide. C. Awardees Awardees of the 2009 IACS include awardees of regional organizations of the SwPD, ASEAN+3, and PIF, as well as from India, South Africa, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, the United States, and this year, Austria. D. Time The non-degree arts and culture scholarship is offered for a period of three months. E. Location The scholarship awardees will be divided into four groups and assigned to the four arts centers (sanggar) located in Bandung, West Java; Denpasar, Bali; Solo, Central Java; and Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. F. List Of Courses In Bandung, West Java, awardees will learn Sundanese art and culture namely the production, maintenance and appreciation to angklung; karawitan, wayang golek, and traditional dance of Sunda and West Java. They will also learn Sundanese and Indonesian Language as a component of the culture. The awardees will learn Javanese art and culture such as the process of batik and its significance; karawitan; traditional Javanese dance; and Javanese language and culture in Yogyakarta dan Solo. In Bali, awardees will learn Balinese art and culture. Balinese artists will teach Balinese art and culture namely Balinese dance, paintings, carving and gamelan lively. Each art center will also arrange special visit to several historic as well as renowned tourist destinations for participant. Prior to their placement in the art centers, the awardees will undertake an orientation for a week in Jakarta and will learn issues such as the Aim and Objectives of the G.
